Student Host @ Orientation 2010

Interested in being a Student Host at Orientation 2010?

Applications Now Closed:

Orientation is an important part of a new student’s transition to university. Not only do new students learn to find their way around campus, learn more about studying at uni, find out about student services and clubs and societies, they also get to meet other new students and make friends. The Host program is vital in making sure this happens.

Host groups are made up of small numbers of new students who are studying the same course. Each host group is led by a later year student – the Student Host. A Host’s main job is to encourage their group to interact in a relaxed and friendly manner, and to help their students settle in and find their way around.

Student Hosts must be:

  • Great communicators, confident, friendly, motivated and enthusiastic
  • Sensitive to the needs of their group and to people from different cultures and backgrounds
  • Familiar with the University environment and willing to share this knowledge
  • Reliable and committed to the Host program

What's in it for you?

  • Have fun and make new friends with other hosts and new students
  • Develop transferable and demonstrable skills in communication, leadership, time management, organisation and group facilitation
  • A letter of thanks from the Provost
  • Host t-shirt
  • An $80 book voucher
  • Priority for working at other University events

Interviews for Student Hosts

In order select the best Hosts for the job, all new applicants must attend a short (half hour), informal group-based interview. No preparation is necessary for the interview – we just want to see how you interact with a group.

*If you have been an Orientation Host previously or were an Open Day Guide in 2009, simply logon to the website and choose the interview session listed for previous hosts and guides. (You will not be required to attend another interview but you need to register your application online). As always, there is no guarantee that you will be accepted into the program, it depends on numbers of hosts who’ve applied matching up with new students in your faculty.

If you are selected as a Host you must be able to attend:

  • A 3 hour training session in late January or early February.
  • From 8.30am-4.00pm Tuesday February 23, 2010 for the Orientation Host Program
  • From 10.00am-12.00am on either Thursday February 25 or Friday February 26 for a catch up with new students
Postgraduate Coursework Students:
The host program for postgraduate coursework students is slightly different from the undergraduate version. Postgraduate Coursework Hosts will still take small groups of students on campus tours, however any training sessions will be different and held separately. Post grad students wanting to volunteer as hosts should still register for an interview just like undergraduate students through the link below.

Postgraduate Research Students:
There are opportunities to be inlvolved at the MSGR research induction day. those interested should email cebarrie@unimelb.edu.au
